The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor and one underground floor. Most of the volume of the building, which has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel plates that slope gently down to the ground, is buried underground.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is situated on a land surrounded by open public space. Our aim was to design a structure asserting itself as a design museum without disturbing the ambience of the natural environment surrounding it. In order to achieve this, we decided to place 80% of the floor space of the museum underground.

Though many of the deco details have been scrubbed on the inside, the exterior—at least above the ground floor—looks much like it did in 1931. The Cathedral does have some interesting artwork, including the towering bronze doors by LA-based sculptor Robert Graham topped by a modern interpretation of Our Lady. John Nava's tapestries featuring a combination of saints and community members line the interior walls. It is the largest collection of hanging tapestries in any Catholic church in the United States.
